It’s been a lost decade on the gridiron for the Carolina Panthers, who haven’t reached the NFL Playoffs since 2017 and are on the heels of posting the NFL’s worst win percentage (.118) in 2023 with zero first-round draft picks at their disposal.

Still, the Panthers’ draft picks have been fairly productive since 2014, with a handful of Pro Bowl-level players and the prodigal talents of running back Christian McCaffery buoying the franchise's total approximate value over the last 10 years.

McCaffery’s total AV in six NFL seasons (72 AV) was roughly a quarter of Carolina’s 10-year total (289 AV), ranking well ahead of the next closest Carolina draft pick during that timeframe (D.J. Moore, at 50 AV).

This year, Panthers fans can finally participate in North Carolina sports betting for the NFL season but will have to wait a while to see who GM Dan Morgan takes in the draft, with the team’s first selection being the 33rd pick after trading their No. 1 selection to the Chicago Browns in exchange for the rights to draft Bryce Young at No. 1 in 2023.

Utilizing ProFootballReference.com, BetCarolina.com utilized their approximate value statistic to combine the total approximate value of the career of each NFL team’s 1st round NFL draft picks from 2014 to 2023 NFL Draft. The teams were then ranked on the average approximate value per pick to see what team has utilized their picks the best.

Where Carolina Ranks In NFL When It Comes To Drafting Talent

Since 2014, Carolina’s average AV per draft pick (28.9) ranks in a tie with the Miami Dolphins for ninth in the NFL, sandwiched between the No. 8 Indianapolis Colts (29.0 AV per pick) and the No. 11 Pittsburgh Steelers (28.7 AV per pick).

Leaguewide, the Los Angeles Rams (71.3 AV per pick), Dallas Cowboys (41.3 AV per pick) and Chicago Bears (36.1 AV per pick) landed the most bang for their buck when it came to drafting value-laden players, while the raw AV total leader was the Baltimore Ravens, who had 428 AV spread across 13 picks between 2014 and 2023.

Conversely, the worst teams in the league when it came to AV average were the Seattle Seahawks (15.7 AV per pick), New England Patriots (17.0 AV per pick) and the Philadelphia Eagles (18.8 AV per pick), while the Seahawks had the lowest AV total in general, at 110 AV across seven picks over 10 years.

Come April 24, Panthers fans will have to wait on the sidelines as their club watches the Bears use their No. 1 overall pick to land a generational talent, hoping Morgan and his front office colleagues can land some late-round sleepers in 2024 to get Carolina back into the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
